# \[1] 11 - Attempted Murder

**Offense Classification: Felony**

**Definition:**

Attempted Murder occurs when an individual **intentionally tries to kill another person but fails to complete the act**. The suspect must have taken **a direct and substantial step** toward committing the killing.

**Elements of the Crime:**

* The suspect **acted with the intent to kill** the victim.
* The suspect took **a direct step toward committing the murder**.
* The act was **not justified** (e.g., not self-defense).

**Penalties:**

* **Jail Time:** 15 to 30 years
* **Fine:** Up to $50,000
* **Additional Consequences:** Potential life sentence if victim suffered severe injuries
