# \[1] 19 - Terroristic Threats

**Offense Classification: Felony**

**Definition:**

Terroristic Threats occur when an individual **threatens to commit violence with the intent to cause widespread fear, disrupt public safety, or intimidate a government entity or group of people**. This charge applies **even if no actual harm occurs**, as long as the threat is credible and intended to instill fear.

**Elements of the Crime:**

* The suspect **communicated a threat of serious violence** (e.g., bomb threats, mass shootings, attacks on public buildings).
* The threat was **intended to intimidate, coerce, or create fear** among a group or the public.
* The suspect **had the capability or intent to carry out the threat** (e.g., possession of weapons, suspicious behavior).
* The act was **not justified** (e.g., not protected speech or a harmless joke).

**Penalties:**

* **Jail Time:** 10 to 25 years
* **Fine:** Up to $50,000
* **Additional Consequences:** Federal investigation, permanent criminal record, potential designation as a domestic terrorist
