# \[1] 31 - Accessory to Hostage Taking

**Offense Classification:** Felony

**Definition:**\
An individual is an accessory to hostage taking when, knowing that another person has taken or attempted to take a hostage, the individual aids, assists, or conceals the offender with the intent to help avoid detection, capture, or punishment.

**Elements of the Crime:**

* Another person committed or attempted hostage taking.
* The suspect knew of the commission or attempt.
* The suspect provided aid, assistance, concealment, or resources.
* The suspect intended to hinder apprehension or punishment.

**Penalties:**

* Jail Time: 20 to 28 months
* Fine: 1,500 dollars to 3,250 dollars
* Additional Consequences: No contact orders, probation, community service, mandatory counseling
