# \[3] 11 - Forging Government Documents

**Offense Classification: Felony**

**Definition:**

Forging Government Documents occurs when an individual **creates, alters, or fabricates official government records or identification** with the intent to **deceive, commit fraud, or gain unlawful benefits.**

**Elements of the Crime:**

* The suspect **knowingly created or altered** a government-issued document.
* The altered document was **intended to deceive or obtain unlawful benefits.**
* The act was **not justified** (e.g., not authorized corrections by a legitimate government official).

**Penalties:**

* **Jail Time:** 5 to 15 years
* **Fine:** Up to $50,000
* **Additional Consequences:** Confiscation of falsified documents, federal charges if the forgery impacted national records
