# \[3] 17 - Extortion of a Public Official

**Offense Classification: Felony**

**Definition:**

Extortion of a Public Official occurs when an individual **threatens harm, exposure, or other consequences** to force a public official to **act against their duties or grant unlawful favors.**

**Elements of the Crime:**

* The suspect **made a threat to a public official.**
* The purpose of the threat was to **gain something of value or force the official to act unlawfully.**
* The act was **not justified** (e.g., not a lawful grievance or negotiation).

**Penalties:**

* **Jail Time:** 5 to 15 years
* **Fine:** Up to $75,000
* **Additional Consequences:** Enhanced penalties if the official was in law enforcement or a high-ranking government role
