# \[3] 18 - Threats Against Public Officials

**Offense Classification: Felony**

**Definition:**

Threats Against Public Officials occur when an individual **threatens violence, harm, or intimidation** directed at a **government employee, elected official, or law enforcement leader.**

**Elements of the Crime:**

* The suspect **made a direct, credible threat of harm**.
* The target was a **public official or government employee.**
* The threat was **intended to intimidate, coerce, or retaliate.**
* The act was **not justified** (e.g., not a lawful protest or free speech protected under the law).

**Penalties:**

* **Jail Time:** 5 to 20 years
* **Fine:** Up to $100,000
* **Additional Consequences:** No-contact orders, enhanced penalties for repeat offenders
