# \[3] 3 - Perjury

**Offense Classification: Felony**

**Definition:**

Perjury occurs when an individual **knowingly provides false testimony or statements under oath** in a judicial proceeding or other legal setting. Unlike Obstruction of Justice, perjury specifically involves **intentionally lying under oath**.

**Elements of the Crime:**

* The suspect **made a statement under oath.**
* The statement was **knowingly false.**
* The false statement was **material to the proceeding.**
* The act was **not justified** (e.g., not a mistake or misstatement without intent).

**Penalties:**

* **Jail Time:** 3 to 10 years
* **Fine:** Up to $25,000
* **Additional Consequences:** Permanent record of dishonesty, possible disqualification from public office or professional licenses
