# \[3] 6 - Hindering an Investigation

**Offense Classification: Misdemeanor / Felony&#x20;*****(Depending on severity)***

**Definition:**

Hindering an Investigation occurs when an individual **knowingly obstructs, delays, or interferes with an ongoing police investigation.** This includes **withholding evidence, lying to detectives, warning suspects of impending police action, or interfering with witnesses.**

**Elements of the Crime:**

* The suspect **interfered with a police investigation.**
* The suspect **knew their actions would impede the investigation.**
* The suspect’s interference was **intentional and not justified.**

**Penalties:**

* **Misdemeanor:** *(If minor interference.)*
  * **Jail Time:** Up to 12 months
  * **Fine:** Up to $5,000
* **Felony:** *(If interference was significant or involved deliberate acts to obstruct justice.)*
  * **Jail Time:** 3 to 10 years
  * **Fine:** Up to $20,000
  * **Additional Consequences:** Probation restrictions, restitution for wasted resources
