# \[4] 11 - Wire Fraud

**Offense Classification: Felony**

**Definition:**

Wire Fraud occurs when an individual **uses electronic communications (phone, email, text, internet) to commit fraud** by deceiving others for financial gain.

**Elements of the Crime:**

* The suspect **used electronic communication to commit fraud**.
* The communication **contained false or misleading information**.
* The act resulted in **financial or personal loss to another party**.

**Penalties:**

* **Felony:**
  * **Jail Time:** 5 to 10 years
  * **Fine:** Up to $200,000
  * **Additional Consequences:** Restitution to victims, technology restrictions
