# \[4] 5 - Money Laundering

**Offense Classification: Felony**

**Definition:**

Money Laundering occurs when an individual **disguises the origin of illegally obtained funds** by processing them through legitimate businesses, financial institutions, or layered transactions.

**Elements of the Crime:**

* The suspect **acquired money from illegal activities**.
* The funds were **processed or transferred to appear legitimate**.
* The act was **intentional and meant to conceal criminal origins**.

**Penalties:**

* **Felony:**
  * **Jail Time:** 5 to 15 years
  * **Fine:** Up to $250,000
  * **Additional Consequences:** Asset forfeiture, bank restrictions, restitution
