# \[6] 4 - Failure to Stop at Red Light or Stop Sign

**Offense Classification:** **Infraction / Misdemeanor**

#### **Definition:**

Occurs when a driver **fails to come to a complete stop at a red light or stop sign**, ignoring traffic control devices and potentially endangering cross traffic or pedestrians.

#### **Elements of the Crime:**

* The driver approached a **clearly marked red light or stop sign**.
* The driver **did not come to a complete stop** before the marked line or intersection.
* There was **no legal exception** (e.g., directed by officer, emergency vehicle).

#### **Penalties:**

**Infraction (First Offense):**

* **Fine:** $500
* **License Points:** 1

**Misdemeanor (Repeat or Resulting in Collision):**

* **Fine:** Up to $2,000
* **License Suspension:** Optional for repeat offenders
