# \[7] 15 - Possession of a Weapon in a Restricted Area

**Offense Classification:** **Felony**

#### **Definition:**

This offense applies when a person **possesses or carries any firearm or weapon in a location designated as a weapon-free zone** by law, such as government facilities, schools, or courtrooms.

#### **Restricted Area Examples:**

* Courthouses
* Public schools or universities
* Government buildings
* Jails or detention facilities
* Airports (beyond security)

#### **Elements of the Crime:**

* The individual **knowingly possessed a weapon** in a restricted zone.
* The area was **clearly posted or designated as a no-weapons area**.
* The individual **was not exempted** (e.g., law enforcement or authorized security).

#### **Penalties:**

* **Jail Time:** 1 to 3 years
* **Fine:** Up to $15,000
* **Weapon Confiscation**
* **Trespassing or Obstruction Charges May Apply**
