# \[8] 13 - Prescription Fraud / Forged Prescriptions

**Offense Classification:** **Felony**

#### **Definition:**

Prescription fraud involves **forging, altering, or unlawfully obtaining a prescription** for controlled substances, or **using another person’s identity or credentials to acquire them**.

#### **Examples Include:**

* Falsified prescription pads
* Calling in fake scripts to pharmacies
* Using multiple pharmacies or doctors ("doctor shopping")
* Altering quantities or dates on valid prescriptions

#### **Penalties:**

* **Jail Time:** 2 to 5 years
* **Fine:** Up to $25,000
* **Medical/Pharmacy Alert Entry**
